Beware of the deceptions of large distribution. Presence of dangerous additives for health, misleading packaging or titles, contraction of inflation… Foodwatch accuses certain brands of taking advantage of the attractiveness linked to the end of the year celebrations on certain products, to “swindle” customers. Practices that the food protection association wants to denounce all the more since they occur in an inflationary context.
In a press release published Tuesday, the organization listed ten misleading products to avoid on the shelves. Among the problematic offerings, he points to the shrink-inflation processes used by some manufacturers, which sell much lower quantities than their packaging suggests.
60 or 80% empty envelopes
In its “Festive Creations” range of duchess potatoes with truffles, Findus considerably increases the empty portion of its packets. From 27% in its standard products, this share of nothing goes to 48% for “holiday special” products. Same process in the distribution brand Auchan that offers sliced salmon in fast packaging up to 60%.
As for desserts, the famous Lindt Pyrenees are not far behind. The number of chocolates in a box has been reduced from 30 to 24.
A composition dangerous to health.
The Nestlé brand offers its Signature Grand chocolate Christmas log in packaging that is disproportionate to the size of the product. Result, it is 80% empty what the consumer pays when buying this essential cake for the end of the year parties.
Maître CoQ’s roast turkey stuffed with morels misleads consumers about one of its star ingredients: morels. Laid out generously on the packaging, the prized mushroom actually only makes up 0.9% of the dish.
Finally, Foodwatch wants to denounce the dangerous composition of certain party products. Macarons de labeyrie with foie gras contain, for example, sodium nitrites, carcinogenic additives according to ANSES. As for Carrefour Extra lumpfish roe, they contain no less than five additives, preservatives and thickeners.
