Passengers of the German railway company Deutsche Bahn will be able, as of January 1, to have a coffee bought on board the trains or eat their food on porcelain or glass plates, for greater “sustainability”, announced Tuesday the ‘ operator’.
“Starting January 1, 2023, customers will be able to choose high-quality porcelain and glass as an option for their drive-thru food and beverage,” the company said in a statement.
Objective: reduce waste by replacing disposable plastic or cardboard tableware.
The “reusable” glasses, plates or bowls will be “free, without deposit and available on demand for all orders” on mainline trains, the public rail operator detailed.
Vegetarian and organic dishes.
Deutsche Bahn is in tune with the new regulations that will come into force on January 1 in Germany. It obliges restaurants, bistros and cafeterias to offer their products to take away in reusable containers. Single-use containers will not be prohibited, but a reusable variant must be offered, without a price increase.
“Deutsche Bahn is accelerating its green transition in inflight catering,” Michael Peterson, the company’s director of passenger transport, was quoted as saying in a press release.
Since March, the carrier has already offered “50% vegetarian or vegan dishes”, as well as “100% organic products”.
More broadly, Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s largest energy consumer, has set itself the goal of becoming “carbon neutral” by 2040.
Currently, 62% of the rail traffic operated by the company runs on renewable energy, according to a spokesperson.
