All little savings are good. Even in high schools. As France is about to experience a difficult winter in terms of energy and the government calls for sobriety, the Brittany region aims to achieve up to 20% energy savings in its secondary schools.
This is the goal of the Anita Conti de Bruz institute, near Rennes, where measures have been put in place in recent days. In the corridors, for example, the timer has been modified and now the lighting turns off after three minutes, compared to the previous five.
Students keep their coats.
In classrooms, after a certain temperature, the heaters stop working.
“In common areas and toilets, places where we move and stay very little”, the thermometer now marks 16 degrees.
An additional cost estimated at almost 30 million
From now on, the students keep their scarves to work and their coats to eat in the canteen. “Il y en a qui râlent car il fait froid mais c’est accepted par la plupart des gens car ils comprennent l’enjeu écologique et économique”, dit Louise, en première, qui fait partie de la quarantaine d’éco-délégués du high school.
In the canteen, the fight to spend less is also in the dishes. No more French fries: they are replaced by baked potatoes, since the establishment considers them less energetic. In the kitchen, another measure, the switching on of the equipment is delayed for a few hours.
In 2021, the energy bill for the 115 Breton public secondary schools amounted to 14.5 million euros, including eight for heating. In 2022, the additional cost is estimated at… 28.5 million (25 million for electricity and 3.5 million for gas).
