In the event of a power outage, some will go… sailing. France could experience power outages during the winter, especially if the season is particularly cold. In order not to run out of light, although these power outages should not last more than two hours, the French prefer to take the initiative and pile candles in their cupboards.
“We have noticed an evolution in the sales of basic products in large distribution,” he explains in bfm tv Francis Clément-Devineau, CEO of the Devineau group, France’s leading candle producer. After already rising in September, candle sales have risen again. “We are at a 26% increase in billing” since the beginning of December, he says.
no shortage
According to the leader of the Devineau group, also president of the General Union of Candle Holders and Candle Makers of France, what is mainly bought are boxes of classic white candles. These are candles that “will burn for six hours,” he specifies. “It allows you to light up, it also allows you to warm up, and then it creates a beautiful enveloping atmosphere.”
Are mains voltages a boon for candle makers? “In fact, we took advantage of consumer concerns regarding the information that has been communicated,” says Francis Clément-Devineau. Still, candle production can keep up, he says, ruling out a possible risk of shortages.
Security rules
However, Francis Clément-Devineau asks that certain safety rules be respected. “Today we see somewhat bizarre setups on the internet to develop the calorific value of the candle” and heat the interior of it, but these solutions are dangerous. “You always have to space the candles four inches apart,” he recalls.
