“We are preparing the future of La Poste to 2030 around two activities,” he announced during a hearing before the Economic Affairs Committee of the National Assembly.
On the one hand, the reinforcement of the “digital safe in a sovereign cloud” offer, known as Digiposte, which has 8.5 million customers and registers a turnover of “800 million euros”, with the ambition of reaching “several billions in the next few years,” insisted the head of La Poste.
The group’s “second major strategic challenge” will be built around “local services” such as “home services such as the delivery of meals or medicines to the elderly,” said Philippe Wahl.
In the context of the aging of the French population, La Poste “could play a fundamental role in the cohesion of society,” he argued.
Mailing continues
Regarding financial results, “the first half of the year showed correct profitability” with a turnover of 17.5 billion euros, said Mr. Wahl, recalling the “important shock” caused by the war in Ukraine and the dizzying increase in energy prices.
The mailings have also gone from “18,000 million in 2008 to 6,000 million this year” and have caused the group to lose “6,000 million euros in turnover in 10 years”, underlines Philippe Wahl.
To return to profitability, the group has diversified its activities around international parcel delivery, banking and insurance.
In 2021, the group registered a turnover of 35,000 million euros.
Questioned by the majority of the deputies about the disconnection of the post offices in the territories, Philippe Wahl invoked “the effects of the pandemic” of the Covid-19 on absenteeism with “sick employees” although “he does not deny the degradation of the service public”.
He highlighted the role of the Departmental Commissions for territorial postal presence in the postal network as well as the “veto right” of the mayors of rural municipalities to oppose the closure of agencies.
