Cement plant invaded by environmentalists: Lafarge denounces “considerable” damage

A Lafarge group cement plant was demolished on Saturday night by environmental activists. The company claims significant damage.

The Lafarge group denounces “considerable damage” after the degradation of one of its cement factories by environmental activists. On Saturday night, around 200 people broke into the La Malle (Bouches-du-Rhône) factory grounds and damaged facilities, buildings and vehicles. “We are still assessing the damage” but it is “considerable,” Loïc Leuliette, a spokesman for Lafarge France, said Monday morning. bfm tv.

“It was a shock”

The factory spokesman confirmed that there was no physical violence by environmental activists. But “some of the families of the staff were gathered in the vicinity” on the occasion of the end-of-year party organized by the company. “As soon as they had the information about this irruption, it was really a scare. You have to imagine that we had more than fifty children in the place, small children”, lamented Loïc Leuliette.

In addition, Lafarge insisted on defending itself against pollution accusations made by environmental activists. This factory is one of those “that produces cement with less carbon,” said the company spokesperson. The cement factory is one of the fifty French industrial sites that emit the most greenhouse gases, according to the list drawn up by the government. The representatives of these factories were received last November at the Élysée.
