The harsh winter ahead in France will have consequences for gas supplies and stocks will not survive the winter, admits Emmanuelle Wargon, president of the Energy Regulation Commission (CRE).
However, the president of the CRE remains optimistic about the distribution. She remembers that imports will allow to cope.
However, the Russian crisis caused by the invasion of Ukraine is disrupting these markets with sharp price increases, especially in Norway, France’s main gas supplier.
Gas goes to the highest bidder
In 2019, imports from Norway, France’s main supplier, reached 36%, the rest came from Russia (20%), which since the war suspended deliveries to Europe. The rest comes, at lower levels, from the Netherlands, Nigeria, Algeria and Qatar.
For this winter, stocks and imports will cover the demand, but questions are already being asked for the next one. By emptying the stocks, France will have to replenish them completely and therefore at higher prices and under pressure from suppliers.
Storengy, a subsidiary of Engie, however claims to be “optimistic” for the supply of gas storage in Europe and France for the winter of 2023-2024.
