Elisabeth Borne said on Tuesday that the government remained “open to proposals” from political and union organizations on pensions, but considered the “Panot-Le Pen” project for retirement at 60 defended by RN and LFI “unsustainable”.
“Whatever our differences, to save our pay-as-you-go pension system, we remain open to proposals” and “determined to dialogue, to build and to act”, declared the Prime Minister during the question-and-answer session in the National Assembly. to the government, the day after President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement of the postponement of the presentation of the pension reform to January 10.
Elisabeth Borne, who will once again receive the political groups this week, and will receive the trade union organizations the week of January 2, has specified that this expansion of the “dialogue” does not “put into question (the) global calendar: an end vote in spring and entry into force of the reform in summer”.
“The financing of our pension system is threatened”
Questioned by the leader of the LFI deputies, Mathilde Panot, the Prime Minister pointed out a “common point” with LFI which would be to be “all collectively united to our pay-as-you-go pension system.” He also considered that “there is a second thing that perhaps we can share” regarding “the financing of our pension system (which) is threatened.”
But Elisabeth Borne judged that retirement at 60 was “an untenable promise”. “The Panot-Le Pen reform means more taxes, less purchasing power for retirees and a threat to the pensions of the youngest because our social model would no longer be financed,” she criticized.
“Faced with the path of demagogy, we are proposing the path of responsibility. We refuse to increase contributions, we refuse to lower pensions. On the contrary, we want to increase them to ensure the sustainability of our pension system even if we live longer. Yes, we propose to gradually work a little more, ”he developed, while the preferred path of the government is to gradually raise the retirement age from 62 to 65 years.
