To encourage motorists to choose the train over the car for travel, there are several levers. There is the reinforcement of the offer, accessibility, price reductions or even almost free as in Spain or Austria or even in the Occitanie region on weekends.
The Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region and the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis will offer an original approach: offering the train for 6 months to those who decide to sell their old car.
Specifically, the TER and urban buses will be free for six months for motorists who sell their vehicle classified at least Critair 5 (or out of category).
mobility low emission zone
The free entrance corresponds to the annual subscription of the Comprehensive Subscription that includes all TER services as well as urban buses.
This initiative is a consequence of the establishment in Marseille of the low emission mobility zone (ZFE-m), in force since last September, which prohibits the circulation of these polluting vehicles.
“On November 14, 2022, we became the pilot region for green planning in France. These six months of free transport will encourage users to prefer public transport to the car”, comments Renaud Muselier, president of the South region. “We want to move towards sustainable and environmentally friendly transport.”
This help is available at the one-stop shop in Metropolis. Remember that driving in a car with a prohibited sticker is sanctioned with a fixed fine that ranges between 68 and 135 euros.
