#Pinkgate: when the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max change color and go from cosmic orange… to pink

On Reddit and Tiktok, internet users have complained about seeing their iPhone 17 Pros go from cosmic orange to pink. At the moment, Apple has not given any official explanation.

A cosmic orange… or comic. In September, Apple presented its new range of smartphones: the iPhone 17. On the program, a classic iPhone, the iPhone Air, an ultra-thin phone and two Pro models.

These latest two models, the Pro and Pro Max, are adorned in a new color, Cosmic Orange. A tone that has the merit of being original, divisive… and even changing color. Although this is not foreseen a priori. In fact, several users have discovered to their surprise that the aluminum chassis of their device tends to turn rose gold for no apparent reason.

The doors multiply

On social media, this phenomenon even has a name, the hashtag #Pinkgate. “I thought I’d go to the Apple Store and see if I could exchange it since I wanted an orange iPhone, not a pink one,” laments one user on Reddit, supporting the photo of an all-pink iPhone, except for the back panel.

On Tiktok, a user noticed the appearance of small pink spots on the rear photo block.

At the moment, Apple has not given any official explanation. But all Internet users have their own theories. According to some, prolonged exposure to UV rays will discolor the phone.

Others talk about using cleaning products that contain hydrogen peroxide. In fact, the chassis of the iPhone 17 Pro is made of anodized aluminum. This process is based on a thin layer of artificial oxide, especially sensitive to hydrogen peroxide. Therefore, in case of repeated or prolonged exposure, this substance could cause a localized color change. The metal would then begin to react chemically, turning the bright orange into a rose gold.

This is not the first time that the iPhone 17 has circulated online for the wrong reasons. When it was published, several Internet users complained under the hashtag #scratchgate about seeing the paint peeling.

Contacted by Tech&Co, Apple, for the moment, has no comment to make. No official explanation has been communicated. In the meantime, just one solution: opt for cases that protect those precious orange phones and stay in the shade, to be safe…
