French electricity consumption continues to fall, -7.4% in a week

RTE had on December 20 downgraded the risk of stress to the power grid in January from “high” to “medium”, taking into account sobriety efforts and the restart of several nuclear reactors.

The consumption of electricity continues by baisser in France, with a return of 7.4% last week by rapport à la moyenne des années précédentes (2014-2019) the same week, according to the last weeks données du gestionnaire du réseau RTE publishes ce Tuesday night.

This figure is released after adjusting for calendar and weather effects: it is therefore the consumption that would have occurred if the temperatures had aligned with the normal ones for the period.

In this way, it is possible to identify structural variations in consumption from one year to the next, beyond the effects of weather, explains RTE. These structural variations are the effect, for example, of variations in economic activity or actions aimed at sobriety. In the last four weeks, the average structural drop has reached 8.7%.

Temperatures above normal for the season

However, the pace of decline slowed last week (-7.4% vs. -8.1% the previous week), according to a calculation “excluding years with too different calendar configurations (the position of Christmas Day conditions the consumption of the whole week)”, indicates the administrator of the electrical network.

RTE explains the slowdown in the decline due to a reduction in the potential for additional energy savings for individuals and companies in the tertiary sector, the rise in temperatures having reduced electricity consumption linked to heating.

During the past week, temperatures “were significantly higher than normal for the season, with a positive difference that reached 8.2°C on Friday, December 23,” he stresses.

The government has asked for sobriety this winter in a context of supply difficulties linked in particular to corrosion problems in part of the French nuclear park.
