Belgium: strike at Ryanair, dozens of planes on the ground

Some 22,000 travelers should be affected by this strike during the three days.

Ryanair flight crew in Belgium launched a three-day strike on Friday to coincide with New Year’s weekend, grounding dozens of planes.

A total of 48 Ryanair flights were canceled on Friday, Philippe Verdonck, president of Charleroi airport, Belgium’s second in passenger traffic, told AFP.

Some 22,000 travelers should be affected by this strike over the three days, Verdonck said.

No impact on aircraft based in other countries

The Irish company operates 15 aircraft from Belgium and the strike was not expected to affect aircraft based in other countries.

Ryanair employees in Belgium have already gone on strike several times this year. In particular, they accuse the company of illegally pressuring employees to work from time to time elsewhere in Europe, particularly Dublin.

The unions have planned a new strike for the weekend of January 7 and 8.

Charleroi airport, which serves more than 190 destinations, the majority in the Mediterranean basin, has a traffic of eight million passengers a year. It is number two in Belgium behind Brussels-Zaventem.
