TAP clarified today that the resignation of Alexandra Reis as a member and member of the board of directors, communicated to the market on February 4, was at the initiative of the airline.
In a clarification to the Securities Market Commission (CMVM), the airline said today that the resignation presented by Alexandra Reis “found following a negotiation process initiated by TAP, in the sense of reaching a consensus by agreement on the cessation of all existing contractual ties .between Alexandra Reis and TAP”.
On February 4, TAP had announced in a communication to the market the “resignation of the position” by Alexandra Reis, adding that she had decided to “close this chapter of her professional life” and take on “new challenges”. .
Finance Minister Fernando Medina fired the Secretary of State for Finance on Tuesday, less than a month after Alexandra Reis took office and after four days of controversy over TAP’s €500,000 compensation.
The compensation to Alexandra Reis was criticized by the entire opposition and even questioned by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, when he said that “there are people who think” that it would be “nice” if the Secretary of State were to remit of the amount.
On Saturday, Correio da Manhã reported that Alexandra Reis was awarded half a million euros in damages for leaving the position of executive director of the airline early in February, while she still had to fulfill two years of duties. In June, she was appointed by the government to preside over Navegação Aérea de Portugal (NAV) and was elected Secretary of State for Finance at the end of the year.
After requests for clarification to TAP, from the finance and infrastructure ministers, and the prime minister himself, António Costa, who admitted not knowing Alexandra Reis’s background, the resignation was announced by Fernando Medina’s cabinet on Tuesday night.
