A total of 42 Ryanair flights were canceled on Saturday departing or arriving at Charleroi airport, the second largest in Belgium for passenger traffic. This was stated this Saturday by Philippe Verdonck, president of the airport. In question, the strike of the cabin crew of the Ryanair company in Belgium, which began on Friday, continues during the New Year’s weekend, with fifteen planes still on the ground on Saturday.
On Friday, 48 flights had been cancelled, and Ryanair expects the cancellation of 38 flights on Sunday. Some 22,000 travelers should be affected by this strike over the three days, said Philippe Verdonck.
The Irish company operates 15 aircraft from Belgium and the strike was not expected to affect aircraft based in other countries. Therefore, some of Ryanair’s Belgian traffic continued to be handled by these foreign-based aircraft.
Several strikes in 2022
Ryanair employees in Belgium have already gone on strike several times this year. In particular, they accuse the company of illegally pressuring employees to work from time to time elsewhere in Europe, particularly Dublin.
After having called the approximately 450 flight attendants and flight attendants of the low-cost airline in Belgium to stop work from December 30 to January 1, the unions are planning a new strike for the weekend of January 7 and 8 .
Charleroi airport, which serves more than 190 destinations, the majority in the Mediterranean basin, has a traffic of eight million passengers a year. It is number two in Belgium behind Brussels-Zaventem.
