Crew members reject TAP’s proposal and maintain their intention to strike in January

The National Union of Civil Aviation Flight Personnel (SNPVAC) general assembly this Thursday rejected TAP’s proposal and upheld its intention to hold a five-day strike until Jan. 31, a union source told Lusa.

Thus, the company’s management proposal was defeated, by 615 votes against, six in favor and one abstention, retaining the option to continue with a five-day strike until January 31, as decided at the last SNPVAC meeting.

It should be remembered that on December 8 and 9, this union staged a strike by TAP crew members, which caused the airline to cancel 360 flights previously and have an estimated total impact of eight million euros.

TAP management and SNPVAC have met in negotiations, following the union’s demands.

Among other things, the company wants to increase the number of hours these professionals work.

TAP’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Gonçalo Pires, assured that “all TAP cabin crew can earn more than they earned in 2019”, but that they “have to work harder” to do so.

In an interview with Lusa, about the renegotiation of company contracts, in November, which motivated the strike call early this month, Gonçalo Pires said TAP’s proposal is based on increasing productivity.

Faced with the current scenario of ongoing negotiations, the [do sindicato] asked the Board of Directors to schedule an emergency meeting as soon as possible, committing to send TAP’s proposal to the Board of Directors 48 hours before said Meeting so that it can reach all members in a timely manner so that everyone can read the document in advance can analyze,” the SNPVAC informed in a statement sent to employees to report on the call for this GA.

TAP executive chair Christine Ourmières-Widener told journalists on Dec. 19 that negotiations were on the right track and that she believed it was possible to avoid more days of strikes.

“Although we do not follow the enthusiasm of the current CEO [presidente executiva]”The truth is that the meetings have taken place on a dialogue basis, with the normal advances and setbacks of these negotiations,” the union said.

The emergency general meeting was intended to clarify TAP’s proposal and ongoing negotiations, “so that members – sovereign in their decisions – can decide in an informed and conscientious manner,” the union stressed.
