The downward trend in electricity consumption continues in France. According to the latest data published by RTE, French electricity consumption fell by 8.5% last week compared to the average of previous years, before the health crisis (2014-2019).
The week before, electricity consumption had already decreased, but less sharply: -7.4%. The milder temperatures observed since the second half of December explain this new drop in consumption. This figure of 8.5% is within the average of the last four weeks observed.
Rising temperatures since mid-December
That day, the average temperature observed in the country was 13.8° against an average of 4.6° in previous years. Since December 19, France has exceeded – quite widely – the normality of the season, every day.
The government’s sobriety plan contemplates a 10% reduction in energy consumption over the next two years compared to 2019.
In a context of energy crisis, RTE has launched this weekly monitoring of electricity consumption. Please note: published data is in line with normal temperatures for the period in question. More specifically, consumption is calculated from a reference temperature, in order to observe structural variations from one year to the next, beyond meteorological effects, such as abnormally warmer or colder weather.
