New drop in household morale in December

Household morale in France fell very slightly in December, stabilizing at a very low level, reports INSEE.

New decline in household morale last month, according to INSEE. The indicator that summarizes the opinion of households on their financial situation, the opportunity to save, the standard of living in France or even the fear of unemployment was 82 last month, compared to 83 in November, being the average between 1987 and 2022 out of 100.

In detail, in December, “the balance of opinion of households regarding their past economic situation fell sharply” and lost five points, while that of their future economic situation fell one point.

The proportion of households that consider that it is a good time to make important purchases falls slightly, the corresponding balance losing two points.

Stability of saving capacity and standard of living

As regards savings, the proportion of households that believe it is a good idea to save has fallen slightly again, but remains above its long-term average.

Regarding past and future living standards in France, INSEE reports close stability, while it reports a sharp drop in fears about the evolution of unemployment.

Close to historical low

Finally, regarding inflation, the proportion of households that consider that prices have risen in the last twelve months is “rising again” and the associated balance of opinion has gained three points and is close to its previous maximum of May 2008.

Household morale fell below 100 points in October 2021 and reached a record low in July 2022 (79).
