Air: Lufthansa pilots abandon the strike until the end of June 2023

The pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) and the group’s management signed an agreement in early September on salary increases that made it possible to avoid a strike movement.

Lufthansa pilots will not go on strike until June 30, 2023 under an agreement signed by management and unions that ended a social action earlier in September, the two sides said on Monday.

“The agreement provides for a social peace obligation until June 30, 2023,” meaning that “strike is excluded until then,” Lufthansa said in a press release.

The pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) and the group’s management signed an agreement in early September on wage increases that made it possible to avoid a strike.

This points to an increase of 980 euros in the basic remuneration of the pilots of Lufthansa and its subsidiary Cargo, which will be paid in two installments: at the beginning of August retroactively and on April 1, 2023.

A rookie co-driver will receive about 20% more base pay over the term of the deal, compared with a 5.5% increase for a late-career captain, according to details made public Monday.

The two collective bargaining partners “will continue their constructive exchanges on various topics” during the social truce that opens, according to Lufthansa.

Despite the satisfactory monetary agreement, Vereinigung Cockpit was delighted to enter a phase of “longer partnership” with management, according to Marcel Gröls, head of collective bargaining within the union.

During the phase of conflict that preceded the agreement, the pilots had stopped working in early September for 24 hours, forcing Lufthansa to cancel almost all its flights from Frankfurt and Munich, its two hubs in Germany.

Europe’s leading airline employs approximately 5,500 pilots in its passenger and freight transport activities. Vereinigung Cockpit is the only union that represents them.

The group reached an agreement in early August with the Verdi union, which represents ground crews. Employees will receive an increase of 200 euros per month, then an additional 2.5% in early 2023 and another 2.5% in July 2023.
