It’s time to take stock of the two main competitors, Boeing and Airbus. There is no photo, once again, Airbus beats Boeing by far. In 2022, the European delivered 661 aircraft and received 820 net orders when the American announced that it had delivered 480 aircraft and received 808 net orders.
However, Boeing ramped up its activity at the end of the year to increase deliveries by 40%. 2022 is also the best year since 20218 before the crash caused by the 737 maximum after two fatal accidents and in 2020 the massive slowdown in air traffic with the pandemic. Specifically, it had registered more cancellations than orders in 2019 and 2020. The number of deliveries and orders began to increase again from 2021.
For Airbus, deliveries have risen 8% compared to 2021, the year in which the group began to increase production after the stoppage due to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a press release from the aircraft manufacturer. In terms of orders, the 2022 result is the best for Airbus since 2017.
737 MAX crash
When it last published quarterly results in October, Boeing was still reporting hundreds of planes built but not reaching customers, including its most popular jets, the 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner. The 737 MAX was banned from flying for twenty months after the Lion Air accidents in October 2018 and Ethiopian Airlines in March 2019, until the end of 2020. The group, which is depleting its inventories more slowly than expected, has delivered 387 examples. in 2022, including 110 in the fourth quarter.
Deliveries of the 787 Dreamliner have been intermittently suspended following the discovery of various manufacturing defects since late summer 2020, before resuming last summer. Boeing was able to deliver 31 during the year, including 22 in the fourth quarter. The American manufacturer stressed in early November that it wanted to return to better health, both operational and financial, by 2025 or 2026.
