United States: air traffic affected by computer failure

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced that its NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) system, essential for the movement of aircraft, is down. Hundreds of flights are already delayed and/or blocked.

Panic in the American skies. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced that its NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) system, essential for the movement of aircraft, is down. Enough to cause many delays or even cancellations, the extent of which is difficult to pin down at the moment. The federal agency did not give an estimated recovery time.

On Twitter, several passengers are reporting that their flight is grounded, as seen in the tweets below.

More than 400 flights were delayed within, to or from the United States on Wednesday, Reuters reports, citing FlightAware.

“Technicians are currently working to restore the system and there are no service repair estimates at this time,” the FAA says.

NOTAM, an essential tool for aircraft

NOTAM is a tool used to warn about possible dangers on a flight. It provides essential information to all personnel involved in flight operations, including pilots, flight dispatchers, and flight planners.

The information may include items such as runway closures, general bird hazard warnings, or low-level construction obstructions.

Composed of three systems, international NOTAMs notify aircrews of any changes to any component of the National Air System (NAS) in the United States.
