Yoghurts, cottage cheese, dairy desserts… Given the increase in production costs, manufacturers of fresh dairy products ask for higher prices in supermarkets. “Energy prices, by affecting the entire value chain, threaten the sustainability of the French sector,” Syndifrais said in a press release published on Tuesday. The professional organization, which brings together the main companies in the sector (Lactalis, Yoplait, Laïta, etc.), calls for an “immediate revaluation” of sales prices between 15 and 20%.
According to manufacturers, energy accounts for “up to 10%” of the manufacturing costs of yoghurts, cottage cheese and other small Swiss cheeses. Syndifrais also lists an increase in the prices of packaging, logistics or even the ingredients necessary for the manufacture of these products, such as starch, sugar, eggs or fruit. Without forgetting, of course, the milk. These costs “will continue to increase in the coming months”, alarms its president Patrick Falconnier, ensuring that all the increases in production costs have not already been passed on in 2022.
“weakened cash”
Furthermore, Syndifrais evokes “weakened treasures”. The price increases negotiated at the beginning of last year, within the framework of the commercial negotiations with the large distribution, were only taken into account “from the months of May and June”, which led the manufacturers “to charge alone with the increases suffered and to assume exceptional and very significant losses during four to six months”, indicates the professional organization. According to the latter, the companies “He will not be able to bear alone, again, such losses caused by a change.”
