Strikes continue in the UK. According to various British media, about 100,000 civil servants will go on strike on Wednesday, February 1, the public and commercial services union (PCS) announced.
Union members will take part in the movement in 124 government departments and another 33,000 will vote next week to join the strike in five other departments, British media report.
It will be the biggest strike by civil servants in several years, warns the public and commercial services union. The demands concern jobs, wages and working conditions.
This mobilization coincides with the “national right to strike day”, launched by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in response to the government’s desire to establish a minimum level of service to be provided during strikes.
Talks to avoid strike
The public and commercial services union criticizes the government for not having put money on the table after its last mobilization in December, and for having deployed the military to replace the strikers during the exceptional stoppages in the health and transport.
The government urged the unions to suspend their actions in exchange for negotiations. Public and Commercial Services Union Secretary Mark Serwotka will meet with Cabinet Office Minister Jeremy Quin on Thursday. He warned that the government should provide more money to prevent the strike.
