Harassment at work does not forgive any sector. But it seems that some are on more favorable ground, such as Banking and Insurance. This is one of the main conclusions of a major survey* carried out by Ipsos for Qualisocial, a major player in occupational health.
Thus, while 35% of the total population surveyed declares having been a victim of workplace harassment, this figure rises to 45% in the Banking and Insurance sector.
Among these employees, 36% report cyberbullying compared to 13% of the general population. Thus, the harassment situation occurs more through digital tools and less face-to-face in the sector.
Women in this sector are especially affected by workplace bullying, as 51% of them claim to have been victims of bullying during their professional lives, compared to 38% globally.
At the same time, only 12% of employees who are harassed in this industry “raise” the issue with their superiors compared to 29% across all industries.
Bullying is no longer face-to-face
However, the employer, when informed of the situation, reacts much better in the sector than in other sectors. The proportion of workers who consider that the employer reacted well to the harassment situation is 59% in all sectors compared to 84% in the Banking and Insurance sector.
Although employees in this sector are the most numerous to declare themselves victims of harassment, they are also, more than in other places, the perpetrators of this harassment: 21% of the people surveyed acknowledge that they are at the origin of these practices compared to 13 % of goods in general.
“The Banking and Insurance sector is among those most affected by workplace harassment. Employees are more victims but also perpetrators of harassment. The lack of feedback on the subject is particularly marked, which shows the need to implement alert systems in the company to prevent situations from repeating themselves”, analyzes Camy Puech, CEO of Qualisocial.
Also in the civil service.
The same study highlights harassment in public service. One in three public sector agents (32%) claims to have been a victim of situations of workplace harassment.
The phenomenon is particularly strong in the territorial public function (40% of those surveyed have experienced it at least once), then in public companies (35%), in the state public function (28%) and finally in the public function hospital (27%).
Among the types of harassment that public sector employees face the most, 70% are related to moral harassment: humiliating comments, filing cabinets, incessant criticism.
*: the Barometer “French employees and harassment at work” Ipsos for Qualisocial, was carried out online. The interviews were conducted from September 15 to 19, 2022 with a sample of 2,000 workers who work in a private or public structure of at least five people, constituting a national representative sample of this population. Of the 2,000 workers surveyed, 482 of them work in the public sector (public service, public institution or public company).
