Pensions: no taboo to “support the birth rate” to balance the system, according to Attal

Guest of the Great Rendez-vous Europe 1/Cnews/Les Echos, the Minister of Public Accounts stressed that demography is “one of the essential elements”, which “implies that we act”.

Within the framework of the pension reform, presented by the Government as essential to preserve solidarity between generations, the Minister of Public Accounts, Gabriel Attal, assured this Sunday that “supporting the birth rate” was “not at all” taboo for the executive.

Guest of the Great Rendez-vous Europe 1/Cnews/Les Echos, the Minister of Public Accounts stressed that demography is “one of the essential elements”, which “implies that we act”.

“We must guarantee couples who have a family project that they will be able to have a child and that society will provide them with the necessary and sufficient conditions to be able to raise their children,” insisted Gabriel Attal.

Increasingly unfavorable relationship between the number of workers and the number of retirees

For several days, the Government has been warning about the increasingly unfavorable relationship between the number of active people (and therefore of contributors to the pension plan) and the number of retirees.

Asked about the possible implementation of a birth support policy, the minister assured that “it is not at all” a taboo and highlighted “the public service for young children”, which is a “great project”.

“Today there are many couples, especially in urban areas, metropolises, who are not particularly planning to have a child, especially since it is an obstacle course to find a place in a daycare center or to support their child,” he said. .

With the reform that it is preparing, the executive intends to “give families an enforceable right to have a place of care for their child.”

“We have taken measures on single-parent families, with the family support allowance that was increased by 50%” in November 2022, added Gabriel Attal.

The minister also wants the government to “accelerate” the reform of the RSA (solidarity active income), to “put counterparties” for the payment of this subsidy, as Emmanuel Macron proposed during the last presidential campaign.

An experiment of this conditioning should be launched in about twenty departments, he indicated.
