EDF forecasts a low level of electricity produced in 2024 due to its reactors under maintenance

Although the year 2022 should be a historical minimum, the electric group estimates that its nuclear electricity production will not yet have returned to its pre-2019 level in 2024, the date on which it began a vast program of maintenance works on its reactors.

EDF’s nuclear electricity production is still likely to be affected in 2024 by construction works, with an estimate of between 315 and 345 terawatt hours (TWh), according to initial forecasts published by the group. This is an estimate at the moment, since the “associated maintenance program (of the reactors) is in the process of being consolidated,” EDF specified on Tuesday.

A historical minimum of production in 2022

These production levels remain well below those recorded in 2018 (393 TWh) and even 2019 (379.5 TWh), when the maintenance program scheduled for the 2019-2024 period began, according to a “particularly busy” schedule. “.

The corrosion problems discovered last winter and this maintenance program, delayed by the Covid crisis, make a large part of the nuclear park unavailable and affect EDF’s nuclear production, which should reach an all-time low in 2022. Indeed, the group Electricity has revised down its production forecasts for 2022, to a level between 280 and 300 TWh, and “probably the lower half of the range”, according to a spokesman.

One in two reactors currently shut down

Half of its 56 reactors were shut down Tuesday due to corrosion problems or scheduled maintenance. This situation poses threats to the electricity supply this winter in France, in a context of European energy crisis and sky-high prices fueled by the post-Covid recovery and the start of the war in Ukraine.

For 2023, EDF maintains its nuclear production targets at 300-330 TWh, up from 340-370 TWh previously.
