The Uber group is not currently planning any job cuts, its boss said Thursday in Davos, as the US tech sector ramps up announcements of social plans. “We don’t expect company-wide layoffs at this stage,” Dara Khosrowshahi told a Wall Street Journal event on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum meeting in the Swiss ski resort.
The US chauffeur-driven car booking platform had about 32,600 employees worldwide at the end of September, according to its latest quarterly report.
More than 10,000 layoffs at GAFAM
Layoff announcements are currently increasing in American tech. Computer giant Microsoft announced another 10,000 job cuts, or just under 5% of its workforce, on Wednesday, citing economic uncertainty and changing priorities for its customers. Amazon and Salesforce announced in early January the layoffs of around 18,000 and 8,000 employees respectively. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, also launched a social plan in November that affects 11,000 jobs.
Dara Khosrowshahi acknowledged that there will always be readjustments between the numbers of his various divisions.
“I hope it stays that way,” he added, however recalling that the group operated in “a dynamic environment” to which it had to quickly adapt.
