‘He’s not going to do it’: These one-day strikers explain why they marched on January 19

Police, firefighters and even a bookseller participated in the demonstration against the pension reform in Paris.

In the processions of demonstrators who marched this Thursday in France to protest against the pension reform, some were not usual. In Paris, BFMTV interviewed several people whose presence at a demonstration is rare.

Among them, policemen like Régis, CRS. “It is a job with workloads, staggered schedules, static positions… All of this makes it very difficult”, he testifies. For him, “that the race time be extended” is not “acceptable”.

Not “putting all operations on an equal footing”

In the processions we find Bulle. This bookseller is showing for the first time in his life. She holds up a sign that reads, “Bookcases are like books, they get damaged over time.” Bulle considers that her work can be difficult at certain points.

“I’m not going to be able to carry boxes until I’m 67, that’s not going to work,” he explains to our microphone. And to add:

“We live 7 years less than the others”

Firefighters are also involved. Peter, who works in Val-d’Oise, judges that his work is far from being compatible with old age. “Firefighters, we live 7 years less than the others and they are offering us to go to make apartment fires on the 15th floor and forest fires on the 59th,” he laments.

With its reform, the Executive wishes to postpone the legal age from 62 to 64 years to 2030. “We must work more,” hammered Olivier Véran, government spokesman, after the last Council of Ministers.

On Thursday, many protesters took to the streets, mostly calm despite some clashes, starting the protest against this denounced reform. “More than two million” people demonstrated in more than 200 demonstrations in France, including some 400,000 in Paris, the CGT said, while the Interior Ministry counted 1.12 million protesters, including 80,000 in the capital. A level of mobilization higher than that of December 5, 2019.

The eight main trade union centrals have set the date of January 31 for the next interprofessional mobilization.
