The purge on the tech giants continues. After Microsoft, which this week announced the loss of approximately 10,000 jobs, or 5% of its workforce, it is Google’s turn to cut to the chase.
In an email addressed to his employees, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet (Google’s parent company) announces the elimination of around 12,000 jobs worldwide.
The economic context and the strategic orientations of the American giant justify this decision, explains the leader. “Over the past two years, we have experienced periods of spectacular growth. To support and fuel that growth, we have hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today.”
strategic review
“Therefore, we have conducted a rigorous review of all product areas and functions to ensure we are aligned with our most strategic priorities as a company. The positions we are eliminating reflect the outcome of this review. They cover Alphabet, areas of products, functions, levels and regions”, explains Sundar Pichai.
And to continue: “As a company of almost 25 years, we are doomed to go through difficult economic cycles. These are important times to reorganize our cost base and direct our talents and capital towards our highest priorities”.
Google promises support measures in the United States, including severance pay, bonuses, payment of available paid licenses. The firm will also maintain the health insurance of the laid off employees for 6 months.
“Outside the United States, we will support employees in accordance with local practices,” adds the CEO.
