The outstanding balance of Livrets A and Livrets de développement durable et solidaire (LDDS) increased by 40 billion euros in 2022, a record since 2012, due to the high level of deposits and interest paid at the end of the year, according to published data. Monday by the Caisse des dépôts (CDC). It stood at 509.7 billion euros as of December 31, 2022, compared to 469.7 billion at the end of 2021.
In detail, French savers deposited 33.490 million euros more in Livrets A and LDDS than they withdrew, a level comparable to that of 2020 (35.210 million euros). But the interest paid in 2022 (6,560 million euros) is higher than in 2020 due to a slightly higher outstanding balance and, above all, the rise in interest rates last year, in two tranches on February 1 and 1. of August. The total is, therefore, at its highest level since 2012, a prosperous year for the two booklets, which at the time had a net collection of 49,160 million euros and 6,620 million in interest.
Returns much higher than those of life insurance funds in euros
Regulated savings have grown again since the beginning of last year. The month of December attests to this, with 2,690 million euros added in total to the two booklets. The increase in wages plays an important role. Still at its lowest level of 0.5% a year ago, the Livret A rate doubled for the first time on February 1, 2022 and then again on August 1, to reach 2%, as a result of a formula of calculation including inflation, which is high in France. The increase in prices also encourages the French to further optimize their savings by transferring, for example, inactive money in current accounts to their Livret A accounts.
These two brochures also no longer have to be ashamed of euro life insurance funds, quite the contrary. The latter rates for 2022 are expected on average between 1.80% and 1.90%, according to Cyrille Chartier-Kastler, founder of the firm Facts & Figures. On February 1, 2023, the Livret A rate will already be a long way off: the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire, at the proposal of the governor of the Banque de France, registered on January 13 an increase in the Livret A to 3% in the next month, the first since 2009.
