Berlin is giving the go-ahead for the delivery of Leopard tanks to Ukraine, German government spokesman Seffen Hebestreit said in a statement on Wednesday.
Germany, for its part, will deliver to Ukraine 14 Leopard 2A6 tanks from Bundeswehr stocks and will authorize countries that so wish to supply Kyiv with whatever tanks they have.
These armored vehicles, eagerly awaited by the Ukrainians, are not without assets, but the number provided may not be enough to win the decision. The Foreign Ministry statement indicates that the target is two Leopard 2 tank battalions for Ukraine, or 80 tanks in total.
That is why Germany will also allow countries that wish to re-export their Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz is expected to address the German parliament on the issue this Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Leopard tanks will “strengthen the defensive capabilities” of Ukraine, London immediately rejoiced.
