Often overshadowed by gas and electricity in the current context of rising energy prices, fuel oil did not go unnoticed during the government press conference on the energy situation on Wednesday afternoon. Asked about the requests of some 3 million French households that use it to benefit from a tariff shield, Elisabeth Borne insisted on the difference in situations between this fuel and gas or electricity:
An envelope of 230 million euros
The device to which the President of the Government refers is an aid of 230 million euros voted this summer within the framework of the “Energy, climate and post-mining” program thanks to an amendment that came to increase the initial proposal of the executive that turned around 50 million euros.
Although it would represent an aid of only 65 euros per affected household, the allocation could be assigned in a specific way, excluding, for example, people who use fuel oil to heat their second home. This financial impulse occurs in a context of rising fuel prices, which have practically doubled in one year.
Included in the energy check
In the process, Agnès Pannier-Runacher spoke about the scope of the energy check system that foresees payments of between 100 and 200 euros for the 12 million most modest households before the end of the year.
The Minister for the Energy Transition indicated that fuel oil would be one of the eligible energies: “The energy check covers fuel oil and pellets. It is not a mechanism that would be limited to a certain type of energy. As we increase the energy check, it also allows us to finance fuel oil and pellets or firewood depending on the heating mode.”
