Medina closes 2022 with a budget break of 1600 million euros

The budget deficit, as measured by public accounting (cash logic, which is determined by the Treasury), ended 2022 at €3,590.8 million, €1,600 million less than predicted in the approved state budget for 2022, the Ministry of Finance revealed this Friday.

In the OE2022, the government had received an authorization from parliament to go to a deficit of 5.2 billion euros: the result of a limit of 106.6 billion euros in expenditure and 101.4 billion euros in prescriptions.

But even with support for families and businesses against the effects of the inflation and energy crisis, estimated by the ministry at more than €5.7 billion, Minister Fernando Medina has achieved what he always said he wanted: accurate accounts and budgetary discipline. For example, last year it got a remarkable slack in budget execution, the 1600 million euros it chose not to redistribute to taxpayers, not even in part.

One of the main arguments for keeping these types of margins or executions more positive than expected is that the country is over-indebted and needs these breaks to not go to the markets as much, reducing the excessive debt load, which still exists. more than 120% of gross domestic product (GDP).
