Marriage: the French revise their budget downward this year

If the planned expenses for the honeymoon are increasing, those for the ceremony are considerably reduced, according to a Cofidis study.

As we know, the health crisis and the social restrictions imposed have weighed down the number of marriages in France in 2020 (154,000) and in 2021 (218,000). Last year was the year of the restart with 244,000 ceremonies according to INSEE. You have to go back to 2012 to find a similar level (246,000). This year should confirm this trend and even amplify it. According to Stéphane Seban, organizer of the Wedding Fair, 300,000 unions should be celebrated.

According to the latest study* by Cofidis and CSA Research on the subject, “2023 should be the year of all records”. “Among the French who want to join for life, 41% intend to do so from 2023”, we can read.

“In 2023, those who were supposed to do it in 2021 but could not postpone it until 2022 because everything was already booked, but also the couple who, without knowing what the health situation would be in 2022, preferred to spend a year,” Clément Tournier explained to BFMTV. , president of the Union of Solidarity Professionals of the Event (UPSE).

Arbitrations on the decoration side, gifts to guests

What to offer a beautiful oxygen balloon to an entire ecosystem (fashion designers, caterers, musicians, photographers…) that has suffered a lot.

However, the high level of inflation encourages budget arbitrage. If the amount allocated to the wedding ceremony is still around 10,000 euros, however, it is experiencing a sharp drop this year.

In fact, in 2023, the French expect to spend an average of 9,873 euros preparing and organizing “the most beautiful day of their life”, compared to 11,063 euros last year (a drop of 1,190 euros or almost 11% ).

As a consequence of this inflation, 69% of French people who plan to get married this year say they are worried – and almost a third say they are very worried (31%) – that inflation will have consequences on their wedding preparations. .

To deal with this, 76% of the couple intend to limit their expenses: 2 out of 10 couples (21%) will try to limit the bill related to the reception venue, 11% will limit the gifts to the guests and 11% the decor.

The honeymoon budget has doubled.

On the other hand, the budget for the honeymoon is greatly revised upwards. According to the study, average spending will be 6,188 euros this year, compared to 3,684 euros last year, an increase of 68%.

A progression that, however, must be qualified because the sharp increase in prices in the air must be taken into account. In France, airline prices increased an average of 21.7% last year.
