British customs officers in England and France will go on a four-day strike during the February school holidays, a union representing them announced on Tuesday, suggesting a halt for travelers planning to cross the Channel.
Some “1,000 Border Force officers in Dover, Calais, Coquelles and Dunkerque are on strike for four days during the school holidays” from February 17 to 20, the PCS union announced in a press release.
The announcement comes as the UK prepares for the biggest day of strikes in a decade on Wednesday. From teachers to railway workers and civil servants, up to half a million people could go on strike to demand wage increases in a country mired in economic crisis.
“Consequences for people who return from vacation”
The general secretary of the PCS union, Mark Serwotka, estimated in the press release that “the strikes announced today within the Border Force will have consequences for people who return from vacation.”
According to him, “the responsibility for these strikes lies with the ministers who refuse to put more money on the table.” By December some 1,200 military personnel had been mobilized in the UK to replace striking paramedics and border police personnel.
