The Spanish group CAF announced this Thursday that it had obtained an order of 57 million euros to supply 15 trams to the Marseille network, the largest contract contemplated the supply of additional trains based on the expansion of the network.
The Marseille network, opened in 2007, currently has three lines, operated with equipment hitherto provided by Bombardier Transport (a company since acquired by Alstom).
With the capacity to circulate throughout the network, these 15 trams must complete the current fleet with a view to the extension of the T3 line to the north and south, announced in 2025.
Same layout as existing trams
This is “a first order” under a purchase contract with CAF for a period of eight years, said the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis.
The new trains will be manufactured mainly at the CAF factory in Bagnères-de-Bigorre (Hautes-Pyrénées), according to the metropolis.
At 42.5 meters long, they will have a design similar to that of the previous generation, evoking an ancient ship.
The Spanish manufacturer has already supplied trams to Besançon, Nantes and Saint-Etienne in France, and recently won a major contract in Montpellier. It has just bought a factory in Reichshoffen (Bas-Rhin) from Alstom.
