Berlin has authorized its manufacturers to deliver Leopard 1 main battle tanks it has in reserve to Ukraine, German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said on Friday.
The latter did not provide additional details on the number of tanks affected and the export program to Ukraine. In April 2022, a few weeks after the start of the conflict, the Rheinmetall group, manufacturer of the Leopard tank, among other things, announced that it was ready to deliver fifty of these armored vehicles to Kyiv. Its leader, Armin Papperger, said at the time that he was waiting for the green light from the federal government.
The Leopard 1s are the predecessors of the Leopard 2s, Kyiv’s long-awaited armored vehicles, of which Berlin will hand over 14 examples of Bundeswehr equipment.
