Ukraine needs weapons, tanks, planes and, why not, ships, but it also needs an air defense capable of detecting threats and directing defense systems. Of the four Ground Master 200 radars purchased by France to protect its sensitive sites, one is destined for Ukraine to guarantee its air defense.
The announcement was made on Wednesday during a visit to Paris by Oleksiy Reznikov, Ukraine’s defense minister. During this trip, he visited the Thales facilities in Limours with his French counterpart, Sébastien Lecornu, Minister of the Armed Forces.
The GM200 is a vehicle-mounted medium-range digital radar. Detects and identifies all types of enemy aircraft (drones, cruise missiles, helicopters, fighter jets) regardless of their speed (very low or very fast) or their altitude (very low or very high) at a distance of 250 kilometers from the area to be protected
the support fund
After the identification phase, if the threat is confirmed, the enemy aircraft will be destroyed 100 kilometers from the airspace to be defended with the data sent by the radar to the anti-aircraft defense systems connected to it, such as the Crotale systems, a device also produced by French Thales and supplied to Ukraine by France.
The amount of the contract for the four radars, including the one in Ukraine, is 212.8 million euros, counting in this budget the renewal of the TRAC 2400 long-range radars. For its GM200, Kyiv used the support fund of €200 million allocated by France.
As part of the military aid provided to Ukraine, France supports air-to-air defense against attacks launched by Russia. The Ministry of the Armed Forces confirmed “discussions with their allies to provide sufficient reserves of missiles for the Crotales.”
