G7 members reaffirm hostility towards Russia and point fingers at Chinese complacency

The G7 trade ministers intend to continue their economic “fight” against Russia so that the country does not benefit from the war in Ukraine. In particular, they want to diversify their trade relations with a tougher deal with China.

The G7 trade ministers, meeting in Germany, announced on Thursday that they wanted to “increase (their) efforts” to prevent Russia from “benefiting” economically from the war in Ukraine, and promised to end trade “naivety” regarding to Ukraine. -à-vis -towards China.

A “more robust” trade policy towards China

In a press release published at the end of this two-day meeting, the ministers first assured that they wanted to “diversify” their commercial relations, in the face of an increasingly tense geopolitical environment.

“We, the G7 Trade Ministers, stress that the diversification of trade and the expansion of trade relations on a mutually beneficial basis are essential to…enhancing the resilience and sustainability of our economies,” the ministers said. .

In his sights, China. “We are going to implement a more robust trade policy against China (…), the naivety is over,” promised Robert Habeck.

A financial mechanism for the reconstruction of Ukraine

The G7 states also addressed Russia and its invasion of Ukraine, while Ukraine’s Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenk was invited.

To support Kyiv, the ministers also discussed a “financial mechanism”, aimed at pooling public and private funds for the future reconstruction of Ukraine. Last June, the group’s heads of state announced that they wanted to “support the reconstruction of Ukraine through an international conference and a reconstruction plan.”
