M&M’s mascots returned during the Super Bowl

A few weeks after putting its famous characters on hiatus, after a controversy with the conservative right, M&Ms took advantage of the Super Bowl to announce the return of all its characters.

Old and new members of the M&M’s family are back. After announcing his withdrawal at the beginning of the year, after a controversy over one of his characters, the pastry chef issued two commercials this Sunday on the occasion of the Super Bowl to announce his return.

First, a thirty-second video of American comedian and comedian Maya Rudolph dropping the famous “ma&ya’s” candies, then a little later, a shorter one of a press conference of the seven-character band announcing that they are back.

The return of the famous mascots

With a flowery dress and a smile on her lips, Maya Rudolph stars in the brand’s first commercial. New muse of chocolates recently, the head of the actress with Democratic affinities and the two syllables of her first name, ‘ma’ and ‘ya’, are in all the candies – which according to the spot have also been filled with fresh clams- rubbery and chunky.” Judging by the dissatisfied pouting of their consumers in the ad, they don’t look very good.

But that’s just the first part of the two-step M&M plan. Shortly after, the brand continues with another announcement, this one very different and much more sober: the animated creatures announce their return during a press conference, and there they are all, including the main person responsible for the controversy that began a few months ago. .

For this reason, it was during the final of the American football championship that brought together 100 million viewers when M&M’s decided to reintroduce its mascots, not even a month after suspending them indefinitely. An advertising strategy that has given a lot to talk about in the networks.

Pets, considered “woke,” were discontinued at the end of January.

The pastry chef said in late January that he would stop using his chocolate mascots in his ads, the first of which, the yellow and red, appeared in 1971. Why? The business had started with the launch, in September, of a new member of the family called ‘Purple’ (purple). The color of the female character is used among other things as a symbol of support for the LGTBQ community. Part of the conservative right was then offended by the arrival of this new character.

M&M’s parent company Mars Wringley is accused by internet users of politicizing its confections, critics accuse the brand whose mascots would have “woke up”. The marketing of a limited edition pack containing only the female characters increased the controversy.

In January, the company issued a statement announcing that its animated creatures would be replaced in its new ad campaigns by actress Maya Rudolph. The new muse of sweets, therefore, will only have been passing through, the historical mascots of M&M’s are back.

“Je suis heureuse d’être de retour, parce que c’est ce pourquoi je suis née. As bonbon jouant et parlant, mes options sont plutôt limitées”, a dit Purple dans le spot diffused ce dimanche, entourée des autres membres of the family.
