Contractors responsible for refurbishing EDF reactors shut down for corrosion problems plan to raise radioactivity exposure thresholds to which certain employees are subject to speed up ongoing repair work on half of the French nuclear fleet, we learned. from EDF.
This measure illustrates the marathon underway to restart a maximum of reactors before the end of February in a context of European energy crisis. The EDF group is deprived of almost half of its nuclear fleet, which weakens French electricity production: on Friday, 29 of its 56 reactors were closed, in particular due to corrosion problems that appeared last winter in power plants most recent.
A dose raised to 14 mSv, below the regulatory threshold of 20 mSv
EDF has been informed “by some” of its partners “that they plan to increase, for some of their employees,” their radioactive dose limits (dose constraints, editor’s note), the group explained in a written statement.
The approach of this “dose restriction” affects several companies – whose names have not been communicated – that intervene in construction works to solve these corrosion problems. The French electricity giant, however, clarified that this maximum dose of exposure remained well below the threshold of 20 millisieverts (mSv) per year, set by the regulations.
