The head of Chinese diplomacy, Wang Yi, ruled on Saturday that US restrictions on the export of semiconductors made by Chinese companies were “100%” “protectionism.”
These restrictions are “100% selfish, 100% unilateral” and are “a serious violation of the principle of free trade,” denounced Wang Yi at the Munich Security Conference, deploring a US position “far from free competition.”
These restrictions reflect “a misperception of China” by the United States, according to the diplomat.
“With this perception, the United States is using all its means to suppress and denigrate China and incite other countries to do the same,” he said.
In the name of “national security”
In October, the United States, in the name of “national security,” announced new export controls aimed at limiting Beijing’s ability to purchase and manufacture high-end chips “used in military applications.”
Washington’s ambition was to complicate Beijing’s development of its own semiconductor industry. The latter are the subject of a fierce battle between the two economic powers for technological dominance.
The United States regularly accuses China of industrial espionage and threats to its national security.
China announced in December that it would file a proceeding with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the United States for its restrictions.
