Guadeloupe: end of the social conflict in EDF after two months of strike

CGT-Guadalupe and management signed an agreement ending a strike that caused power outages in tens of thousands of homes in the Caribbean archipelago.

In Guadeloupe, the social movement that paralyzed the thermal power plant of EDF Production Electrique Insulaire (PEI), the largest electricity producer on the island, ended with the signing of an agreement, the CGT-Guadeloupe reported this Saturday.

This “12-page agreement”, signed on Friday night, occurs after more than 60 days of strike by the union due to the “employer’s refusal to apply the labor code in the company and therefore to guarantee the minimum working conditions provided for by law,” he said in a statement.

The first 14 articles of the agreement, which AFP was able to read, therefore include the application mechanisms in terms of health, coercive fines, bonuses, security, rest, etc.

EDF makes a concession in compensation

EDF PEI Pointe Jarry, accepts “at the request of the Overseas Minister, in order to alleviate the conflict within his establishment, to allocate the amount of 560,000 euros for the payment of a lump sum and exceptional compensation.”

The amount of compensation was a persistent point of contention during the negotiations. This concession made by EDF does not satisfy the union, which intends to seek additional compensation in court.

EDF PEI employs 106 agents in Guadeloupe.

The union also calls for “equal pay treatment for temporary workers while on assignment at EDF PEI.”

On the points of unsatisfied claims, “management will assert, where appropriate, its position in court,” indicates the agreement that contains the union’s intention to take the case to court.

Questioned by the local press at the end of the negotiations, the management of EDF PEI, but also the new prefect of Guadeloupe, Xavier Lefort, who played the role of mediator throughout the various phases of the negotiation, greeted the end of the strike that caused very long power outages.
