Boeing again suspends delivery of 787 to analyze an element of the fuselage

The US aviation watchdog agency, the FAA, has indicated that the US manufacturer will once again suspend delivery of its 787 long-haul aircraft. The decision follows Boeing’s discovery of an error in the analysis of one of its suppliers on the pressurization bulkhead. at the front of the aircraft.

Boeing has once again suspended the delivery of its long-haul 787 aircraft, already interrupted for several months in 2021 and 2022 due to poor workmanship, in order to take a closer look at an element of the airframe, the supervisory agency said Thursday. of US aviation, the FAA. “Deliveries will not resume until the FAA is satisfied that the issue has been resolved,” the agency said.

By examining the certification files, Boeing discovered that one of its suppliers had made a parsing error in the pressurization bulkhead at the front of the aircraft, the US manufacturer explains in a separate message. The group made the decision to suspend deliveries while it redid the analysis and related documents.

Delivery of 70 to 80 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in 2023

The FAA says it is working with Boeing “to determine what actions may be necessary for recently delivered aircraft.” The company assures for its part that there is no “immediate danger” for the 787 in service and that the latest problem detected “should not increase” the modifications already planned in the produced aircraft. In fact, the 787 Dreamliner has faced several pitfalls in recent years. The manufacturing defects were discovered in the late summer of 2020. The device was closely examined, and then other problems appeared. Boeing had to suspend deliveries, from November 2020 to March 2021 initially, then between May 2021 and August 2022. And reduce production rates.

But after deliveries resumed last summer, Boeing was able to deliver 31 in 2022, including 22 in the fourth quarter. And in December, United Airlines announced plans to order 100 787s and opt for an additional 100. In January, however, the manufacturer delivered only three. It still planned, when it published its results at the end of January, to deliver between 70 and 80 devices by the end of the year and kept to this target on Thursday.

After the two fatal accidents of the 737 MAX and the aircraft’s flight ban for twenty months, the massive slowdown in air traffic due to the pandemic and the production problems of the 787, Boeing is counting on deliveries of this aircraft to recover financially. The group’s share fell 3% in e-commerce after the announcement.
