GALVA SERVICE: Upgrading, a green asset for the steel industry

The ArcelorMittal group has set itself the goal of reducing its CO2 emissions by 35% in 2030 in order to reach zero emissions in 2050. Recycling, improving… the steel industry becomes ecological!

Galva Service, a subsidiary of the ArcelorMittal Group, actively participates in the decarbonisation objectives of the group’s activities by renewing part of its steel to meet the needs of the construction sector. A circular activity that benefits from the synergies created by the group. Meeting with Edouard Vaquié-Menut, director of Galva Service.

What is special about the Galva Service?

Galva Service is specialized in the profiling of steel sheets for roofs and building cladding.

The profiling operation consists of the cold transformation of flat steel sheets into trapezoidal or corrugated sheets. Huge coils of already lacquered steel are uncoiled and then the flat sheet is sheared to the desired length before passing through a succession of rollers to form it into the desired shape.

The sheets shaped in this way will be destined to the coating of logistic, industrial or agricultural warehouses.

The particularity of Galva Service lies in its supply of raw materials. These are steel coils manufactured mainly in France and from production excesses or defects in various factories of the ArcelorMittal group.

Upon arrival at our workshops, each coil is inspected and the defects are listed to define the use that can be given to it.

None of these defects alters the technical or mechanical characteristics. They are essentially aesthetic (scratches, lacquer defect, color difference)

Although steel is 100% and infinitely recyclable, the remelting operations of the material in gigantic furnaces consume relatively much energy and emit CO2.

By using these second-choice coils for roll forming, Galva Service is part of a circular economy, as it prevents too early degradation of these coils to scrap for remelting.

The stakes are high in terms of decarbonization because a ton of recycled steel saves one and a half times its weight in energy.

Who are your customers?

Our products are of interest to construction professionals such as roofers, carpenters, materials dealers or individuals.

We short trade to clients located primarily in France, directly or through our website.

Our web store offers the different coil arrivals in real time, then our customers can make their purchases by selecting the colors, lengths and shape that will be given to the sheet. Next, we carry out the custom profiling in an average of 5 days.

In this virtuous circle of recovery/transformation, customers thus have access to finished products with an average price between 20 and 30% lower than that of the premium product market.

We produce sheets for roofs or cladding in 3 profiling lines, which allows us to offer a selection of 12 different profiles to satisfy the largest number of customers.

Steel profiles are mainly used in the industrial and logistics construction sector, but their application is increasingly applied to the cladding of tertiary or residential buildings.

What prospects?

Whether it’s for electronics, furniture, or clothing, the trend is to reuse second-hand products.

By offering upgraded steel that has retained all of its mechanical capabilities, Galva Service is well positioned in this movement.

The company is also a reference in the sector since it has specialized in improvement for more than 20 years.

This experience is in line with the increase in demand, but also with the challenges of a sector affected by high energy costs and oriented towards the decarbonization of its activities. For this reason, more and more users of metal roofing and cladding are looking for solutions at the right price.

Despite market tensions and rising energy prices, the outlook is encouraging. Sales of metal roofs also benefited from the significant growth in photovoltaics; the steel profile being an ideal support for the installation of solar panels.

Galva Services is now positioned as a leader in the improvement of steel in the French sector and is fully in line with the objectives of the group and the synergies developed by ArcelorMittal.
