More than €122 million from the Environmental Fund has been allocated to the program to support more sustainable buildings, the government announced on Sunday, citing a 91% implementation of what was set out in the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
In a statement released this Sunday, the day a report with updated data is published, the Ministry said that “the Environmental Fund of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action has already implemented EUR 122.6 million, which is 91% of the a total of 135 million is provided for in the PRR for the Support Program for +Sustainable Buildings in the residential area”.
Emphasizing that “all set targets were exceeded” for this second phase of the initiative, which started in June 2021 and ended in May 2022, the government speaks of a primary energy reduction of 47.4% (corresponding to the target of 30 %) , in interventions in more than 10 million square meters of private residential buildings (the target was just over one million square meters) and even 152 MW of additional renewable energy capacity (when the target was 35 MW).
In addition, “it is also estimated that more than 38,000 tonnes of equivalent carbon dioxide emissions have been avoided each year, in addition to total annual savings of €38 million,” the Executive added.
The PRR has registered an amount of EUR 610 million to increase the energy efficiency of buildings in Portugal, of which EUR 300 million is for the residential sector, EUR 240 million for public buildings and EUR 70 million for services.
The Environmental Fund was created after the extinction of the Portuguese Carbon Fund, the Environmental Intervention Fund, the Fund for the Protection of Water Resources and the Fund for the Conservation of Nature and Biodiversity.
The Portuguese PRR has a total endowment of 16.6 billion euros, 13.9 billion euros in grants and 2.7 billion euros in loans.
