EDF has identified 320 welds at risk of cracking in its nuclear power plants, of which it wants to have 90% controlled by the end of the year, according to its strategy communicated to the Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) after the recent discovery of a large crack at the Penly 1 reactor (Seine-Maritime).
No consequences on production?
“ASN takes note of this change in strategy and considers that it is EDF’s responsibility to implement it,” the nuclear policeman said in a press release on Thursday.
The discovery of new cracks in pipes The EDF reactors under maintenance “do not fundamentally change” expectations for electricity output from the French nuclear fleet next winter, RTE, manager of the high-voltage grid, said on Thursday.
