[Chariot BFM Business] Annual Price Increases Are Already Hitting Shelves

Less than three weeks before the end of the trade negotiations, 4 out of 10 products in our selection have seen their price increase, for a global increase of 0.8%. The increases should continue at least through June.

Less than three weeks after the end of the trade negotiations, the price increases are already being felt. This is what we see in the BFM Business cart, our indicator based on a selection of 48 consumer products among the 200 most purchased in France according to Iri.

This week of March 20, the prices of 19 products have increased in our test drive compared to March 6, the date of our previous price survey. In just two weeks, 40% of the products in our cart have been uploaded.

Our selection, which was worth 157.29 euros the day after the negotiations (almost 13 euros more than in May 2022) has thus gone from 1.25 euros since then to 158.54 euros (+0.8%).

What are the products that have increased the most in the last two weeks? The cake goes to the frozen Bolognese lasagna from the Marie brand that took 50 cents and now costs 5.14 euros. They are followed by the President butter waffle sold at 2.99 euros compared to the previous 2.55 euros (+44 cents), the bottle of Ricard pastis (+42 cents at 19.54 euros), the pack of 16 natural Danone yogurts (+33 cents to 3.26 euros)), the 276-gram package of Granola cookies (+24 cents to 2.18 euros) and a series of products that took 20 cents such as the Sodebo Roma salad (2.96 euros ) or Winged Bull organic basmati rice at 2.89 euros.

+14 euros in 10 months

Keep in mind, however, that some products are on the decline. These are loss-leading products such as Pampers Baby Dry x47 diapers that drop from 15 euros compared to 16.99 euros at the beginning of March or the 400-gram jar of Nutella that drops 31 cents to 2.68 euros after have touched the 3 euros.

Drops that do not compensate for the general swelling of our cart. Since May 2022, our selection of 48 products has increased by almost €14, that is more than €56 a month for weekly purchases and €672 for a full year.

Keep in mind that these price increases are just the beginning. After trade negotiations between distributors and manufacturers, they should take several weeks or even several months while the brands put the ordered products on the shelves at the new prices. The increases granted to the products of large brands amount to 10% for total inflation (including SME products and distributor brands) that should reach between 4 and 7% by June according to Iri.
