“The eight Leo (Leopard) 2s are all in the Ukraine,” Norwegian military spokeswoman Stine Barclay Gaasland said. A contribution that, along with that of other allies, will be “decisive” for the next Ukrainian counteroffensive, she believes.
The Scandinavian country had indicated in February that it would give Ukraine eight of its Leopard type 2A4, a penultimate generation model that it will replace for its own needs with more modern Leopard 2A7s, of which it has just ordered 54 copies.
In addition to the tanks, Norway pledged to provide kyiv with up to four support vehicles, ammunition and spare parts. Ukrainian crews called to operate the Leopard 2 are currently being trained in Poland under the aegis of the European Union, the Norwegian military said.
Other Western countries such as Poland, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Finland and Canada have delivered or promised Leopard tanks to Ukraine to counter the Russian invasion.
