The head of the Les Républicains party, however, qualified his statements, explaining that it is up to the head of state himself to “make this decision.” “General De Gaulle had done it,” remembers Bruno Retailleau. “But it is not up to me to ask for this resignation because it would weaken the presidential function,” the former Interior Minister moderated.
An inevitable return to the polls
Whatever the decision of the President of the Republic, the president of LR believes that the return to the polls is inevitable. “We’ll get there one way or another,” he thinks he knows. “There are three ways to do it: the resignation of the President of the Republic, the dissolution or the referendum,” lists Bruno Retailleau on RTL. “State medical aid (AME) or the limitation of social assistance” could be issues to be addressed to the French, according to Vendéen.
A few weeks ago, Édouard Philippe had already called even more clearly for the departure of the President of the Republic. On October 7, before the same microphone, the former Prime Minister asked Emmanuel Macron to organize “early presidential elections” after the approval of a budget.
According to an Odoxa survey for the public Senate and the regional press published at the end of October, 67% of French people surveyed approved the request for the early departure of the President of the Republic presented by Édouard Philippe. For his part, Emmanuel Macron has repeatedly reaffirmed that he will not resign.
