Ukraine gets a $15.6 billion IMF aid package for reconstruction

This aid of 15.6 billion euros is aimed at “supporting the economic recovery” of Ukraine and creating “the conditions for long-term growth after the conflict and on the path to accession to the European Union.”

Together with the new military aid announced by the European Union and the United States, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) launches an aid plan for the reconstruction of Ukraine. An agreement was reached with the Ukrainian government on Tuesday for aid totaling $15.6 billion.

Membership of the European Union

The plan should allow “supporting the gradual economic recovery while creating the conditions for long-term growth in a context of post-conflict reconstruction and on the way to joining the European Union” (EU), the IMF said in a statement. . The agreement will be presented “in the coming weeks” to the Fund’s Board of Directors for its final validation.

Despite these difficulties, the Ukrainian government was able to “maintain financial and macroeconomic stability, in particular thanks to substantial international support and the implementation of judicious policies.”

Support Ukraine “as long as necessary”

In a communication, the American secretary to Trésor Janet Yellen greeted the agreement between the institution and the Ukraine, adding that the States-Unis “continued to support the government and the Ukrainian people for long periods of time” face Russia.

Ukraine has benefited from significant support since the start of the conflict on February 24, 2022, both from the World Bank, which has already granted it more than 20 billion dollars, in the form of loans or donations, and from the United States, plus of 110 billion dollars integrating military support.

A large part of these funds have made it possible to keep public services afloat and pay the salaries of public officials, as well as ensure care for the internally displaced.

The IMF expects a partial and gradual economic recovery this year, in particular thanks to the maintenance of essential infrastructure, such as the electricity grid, still in Russia’s sights.
